Probably best known for producing all the Nancy Sinatra hits, Lee Hazlewood’s career is a strange beast. He’s from Texas and has a knack for country, but he always stayed with a large foot in L.A. pop music and he had an amzing producer’s ear. He was the first person to offer a contract to Gram Parsons and the International Submarine Band and refused to let Parsons join the Byrds when the opportunity arose. In order to join the Byrds, Parsons signed over 100% of his rights to the ISB name and the publishing of all their songs. Gram was a trust-fundy so it was no skin off of his back, but it fucked over the band. Gram with the Byrds, Hazlewood released their record and collected all the (slim) profits from it. Hazlewood later moved to Sweden where he put out the very cool record “A Cowboy in Sweden.” This is a strange little number about a bullfighter that has a Shel Silverstein type of quality to it.
