Terry Allen is one of the coolest people I’ve ever heard of. He’s made his main income by being an award winning sculptor with pieces in museums and galleries all over the world. As if that weren’t enough, he’s written dozens of some of the most ideosyncratic country songs ever. His songs have a similar vibe to Tom Russell’s: very Southwest/Mexican influence (he lives in Santa Fe), and he shares a similar twisted sense of humor and completely non-formulaic storytelling style. He wrote most of the songs on Peter Rowans album “Texican Badman” which I think is one of the ten greatest albums of all time (postings of that forthcoming). It’s hard to choose just one, but I think this is a good example.
